HARARE – President Dr Emmerson Mnangagwa has conferred National Hero status on the late Ambassador Victor Matemadanda, recognising his distinguished contribution to Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle, national development and diplomatic service.
The announcement was made on Monday by ZANU PF Secretary for External Affairs, Cde Simbarashe Mumbengegwi, who officially conveyed the decision to the Matemadanda family on behalf of the President and the ruling party.
Ambassador Matemadanda, a decorated liberation war veteran and senior ZANU PF leader, passed away last week after a long period of illness. His death has been widely mourned across political, military and diplomatic circles, with many describing him as a dedicated patriot who devoted his life to serving Zimbabwe.
Over the years, he held several influential positions, including Secretary-General of the Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association and Deputy Minister of Defence and War Veterans Affairs. He also served as Zimbabwe’s Ambassador to Mozambique and Eswatini, where he played a key role in strengthening bilateral relations and advancing the country’s diplomatic interests.
Announcing the conferment of National Hero status, Cde Mumbengegwi said the ruling party and government had recognised Ambassador Matemadanda’s unwavering commitment to the liberation of Zimbabwe, his dedication to the empowerment of war veterans and his service to the nation.
“His contributions to the liberation struggle and the development of our country were immense. He served Zimbabwe with distinction both at home and abroad,” he said.
Family members expressed gratitude to President Mnangagwa and the government for honouring the late ambassador, saying the recognition reflected the sacrifices he made throughout his life in service of the nation.
Mourners continue to gather at the Matemadanda family home as preparations for his burial at the National Heroes Acre in Harare get underway.
The conferment of National Hero status places Ambassador Matemadanda among the country’s most distinguished sons and daughters whose contributions to Zimbabwe’s liberation and nation-building have been recognised at the highest level.
