MASVINGO — FC Wangu Mazodze’s turbulent 2026 campaign has taken another dramatic turn, with the Masvingo-based outfit facing a leadership crisis just days before its potentially explosive derby against Masvingo United.
The club has been rocked by the departure of several key officials, raising fresh questions about its stability just as the Pacific Storm Eastern Region Soccer League season enters its decisive phase.
Coach Martin Nyanzira, team manager Emion Emara Maganga, treasurer general Aleck Tabe, and spokesperson Courage Kandira have all resigned within a short period, according to resignation letters seen by the Masvingo Mirror.
These developments come against a backdrop of reported financial difficulties at the club, with sources indicating that players and members of the technical team are owed money.
Club chairperson Knowledge Mabvuure confirmed the departures of Tabe and Kandira but disputed the suggestion that Nyanzira had completely severed ties with the club, saying the coach remains part of the organisation.
Mabvuure also clarified that Maganga is an employee of the Mazodze Family Trust who had been seconded to the football club.
The club was expected to hold an emergency meeting to contain the situation and clarify its leadership structure ahead of the weekend’s derby.
The latest turmoil represents another difficult chapter for a club that has already faced financial uncertainty before the start of the 2026 season.
Mazodze initially missed the Eastern Region league fixtures after failing to meet the affiliation deadline but was readmitted after settling its financial obligations.
Nevertheless, the club managed to continue its campaign and has remained competitive in patches. As recently as the 25th match week, Mazodze secured a 1-0 victory over Destiny Stars—a result described as vital as the season entered its business end.
However, the current crisis threatens to shift attention away from matters on the pitch.
The timing is particularly significant given the club’s long-running rivalry with Masvingo United. The two sides share Mucheke Stadium and regularly attract sizeable crowds for their derby encounters.
The two Masvingo clubs have already met this season, with Masvingo United edging out FC Wangu Mazodze 3-2 at Mucheke Stadium in May.
For Mazodze, the immediate challenge is therefore greater than simply preparing for another derby.
The club must first attempt to restore stability behind the scenes, address concerns surrounding its finances, and ensure that the latest upheaval does not derail preparations for the remainder of the campaign.
The situation also represents a sharp contrast to the ambitions expressed at the beginning of the year, when the club appointed experienced coach Elisha Mukusha, with Martin Nyanzira initially serving as his assistant.
At the time, Mukusha said the club’s objective was to compete for the Eastern Region championship and gain promotion to the Premier Soccer League.
With the season now approaching its decisive stages, Mazodze’s ambitions face a different test: maintaining organisational stability while competing on the field.
The coming days could therefore prove crucial in determining whether the club can put its internal problems behind it, or whether the latest departures will trigger a deeper crisis.
