Marondera (New Ziana) – A 29-year old mentally ill man from the Macheke area of Murehwa district, Mashonaland East province recently struck and killed his 14 year- old sister with an axe following an argument with his father.

Provincial police spokesperson Inspector Tendai Mwanza confirmed the incident and appealed to members of the public who look after people with mental illnesses to closely monitor their actions and movements so as to avoid such tragic incidences.

Insp Mwanza said sometime this month Washington Chimhanda allegedly had an altercation with his father, Kenneth (56) over some domestic issues.

After the heated exchange, Washington, who is mentally disturbed, allegedly threatened to kill a member of the family.

He was later seen sharpening an axe ostensibly in preparation for fulfilling the threats he had made.

Later on, the father left the homestead to consult a self-styled prophet for spiritual guidance.

At around 1900 hours, the accused’s mother Otilia (59) served supper and they ate together with Washington and the now-deceased Polite while sitting outside the house.

Inspector Mwanza said Kenneth suddenly grabbed an axe which was lying on the ground and struck Polite with it once on the stomach.

Polite tried to run away but fell down and died on the spot.

When the father returned home he was briefed about the incident and he went to Macheke police station to report.

Police details were despatched to attend the scene and arrested the accused who was still in the vicinity while the body of the deceased was taken to Marondera Provincial Hospital for post-mortem.

“It is saddening to note that such a horrible incident could not have happened had those who were present acted promptly to the threats that were made by the accused. Those taking care of mentally ill patients should be alert at all times and make sure that they do not leave weapons lying around which can be used to kill or injure someone. They must also ensure they do not default from taking their medication,” said Inspector Mwanza.
