Gweru (New Ziana) – Police in Midlands have called upon church and community leaders to pray for peace in the Province following a wave of violent crimes which have resulted in an upsurge in murder cases.
Zimbabwe Republic Police Midlands spokesperson, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko made the appeal after a 28-year-old man died after being struck with a brick in Gweru’s central business district.
“We call upon the church, community leaders and all responsible persons to preach messages of peace. May churches help in prayers for God’s intervention so that peace is embraced at all levels of our society,” he said.
The deceased has been identified as Kelvin Nyathi of Gweru.
The suspect Emmanuel Maparutsa (28) of Mkoba 17 was arrested and is assisting police with investigations.
“Preliminary investigations established that the two were standing outside Ok supermarket when they picked an argument. It degenerated into a fist fight. The suspect started running away while the now deceased chased after him. He caught up with him and in the process, the suspect picked up a brick and used it to hit Kelvin several times on the head.
“When Kelvin became unconscious, the suspect ran away from the scene but was pursued and arrested by members of the public who were nearby. They handed him to the Police who later attended the scene.”
Police in Gweru are also investigating the possible murder of an unidentified woman whose decomposing body was found on the outskirts of Gweru this week.
Last week, a 29-year-old man was found lying in a pool of blood with protruding intestines in a horrific murder case which occurred in Mbizo Section 5, Kwekwe.
Early this week, Gweru was in the headlines after a local vendor Leo Kanyimo (38) of Woodlands Phase 1 allegedly butchered his wife and two children, following a suspected domestic dispute.
