    Midlands police warn inter-city travellers

Gweru- The Zimbabwe Republic Police Midlands Province has urged citizens to comply with lockdown regulations as the number of inter-city travellers continues to increase.

A survey conducted by this publication revealed that the highways are still busy with travellers moving from city to city during the current lockdown despite a government ban.

Midlands police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko referred to the Statutory Instrument 10 of 2021, which outlines the kind of movement only allowed during the lockdown.

“SI 10 of 2021 is still in force. All citizens of this country, including those in Midlands province, all areas, are implored upon to comply. This is designed to protect ourselves and others from the transmission of the Covid-19 virus, he said.

“Covid-19 is real, and is a real danger to life. Long distance or city to city journeys are only allowed to people engaged in essential service.”

Insp Mahoko said those who flout the government directive will be committing an offence and if caught, will be arrested.

Travellers interviewed by this publication insisted that their movement is based on essential items and issues.

A pirate commuter omnibus driver said what is essential depends on what a person does to put food on the table.

“We have to bribe the traffic cops to pass through the check points and roadblocks, we have no choice because we also want to survive,” the driver alleged.
