Gweru (New Ziana) – Ruling ZANU PF party primary elections in the Midlands province have been postponed to Sunday for logistical reasons, giving candidates vying for representative slots in the national parliamentary and local government vote later in the year an extra day to campaign.
Over 1 400 aspirants have registered to battle it out in the Midlands province for the right to represent the party in local government and parliamentary elections due around mid year.
But the primary elections in the province, and Masvingo, were shifted from Saturday to Sunday for logistical reasons, giving the candidates an extra day to canvass for support.
The elections in the province, and elsewhere, have drawn the strongest interest than ever to represent the party in an election.
Nearly 3 000 aspirants submitted applications to run in the internal polls in various segments and areas in the Midlands province, but this was later whittled down to 1 400.
Given the competitive nature of the elections, the cancellation of Saturday’s voting has likely been much welcomed by the candidates, as it gave them more time to woo voters.
