KWEKWE – The Kwekwe community was plunged into mourning when they received the sad news
that a former teacher Dexter Nyama, who once received a wheelchair donation from the First Family
in 2020, was killed in a hit and run accident in Amaveni last Friday evening.
Nyama, had both his legs amputated after being diagnosed with cancer. He was 55.
Sources in Amaveni said Nyama was killed in a hit and run accident at around 11pm last Friday by an
unidentified motorist. He was pronounced dead upon arrival at Kwekwe General Hospital.
“What happened is so sad. A heartless driver hit Nyama with his vehicle and never stopped to assist
or take him to the hospital. A well-wisher later came and took him to the hospital but he died when
they arrived at Kwekwe General Hospital,” said Peter Banda of Amaveni.
Midlands acting police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Fungai Ngawagare confirmed the fatal
accident.
He said Nyama was crawling from his residence to Amaveni Superette, when he was run over by an
unidentified motor vehicle. He sustained severe injuries on the head and on the ribs as a result of
the crush.
“We are appealing to members of the public who might have information that can help identify and
locate the driver and the motor vehicle involved in this case to approach their nearest police,” said
Asst. Insp. Ngawagare.
Nyama was buried at Amaveni cemetery on Monday.
On 12 April, 2020, the First Family saw Nyama seated by the roadside in Amaveni, Kwekwe as they
drove by. The disabled man asked for a wheelchair from the First Family.
On the Easter Sunday, the First Family honoured its pledge and handed over a new wheelchair and
groceries to Nyama.
Last year, Nyama, a former Sable Chemicals employee, received another wheelchair and groceries
from the then aspiring Kwekwe Member of Parliament, Energy Dhala Ncube.
The former teacher, lost his first leg in 2002 after he was diagnosed with cancer. Years later doctors
recommended that the remaining leg be amputated to save his life.
