Mutare, (New Ziana)- The Mutare City Council has began installing solar traffic lights in the city, saying this would help end congestion on the roads when robots were not working.

The first such traffic lights have been installed along the intersections of Second Street, Aerodrome and Sanhanga building.

City public relations officer, Spren Mutiwi said the project is set to help in reducing the rate of accidents which occur during power cuts.

“The installation of the solar traffic lights will reduce the rate of accidents at the two black sport intersections,” he said.

He said the contractor had completed civil works and structural works and is currently working on mounting the traffic lights and accessories.

“The project was overdue and we are happy that at last we are having the solar traffic lights in the city,” Mutiwi said.

He said council was also pushing for solar street lighting, which would encourage night tourism in the city.

“Our thrust is to light up the city with solar street lights and push the night tourism agenda. So our focus is now on scaling up the public lighting system and improve public safety of our residents and stakeholders,” he said.
