THE Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) Mutimurefu Prison has been commended for its agricultural developments.
Masvingo Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Ezra Chadzamira, was at Mucheke Stadium last week for the celebration of the provincial 16th African Prisons and Correctional Service Day held under the theme, “Rehabilitation a collective responsibility”.
Speaking during the celebration, Chadzamira said since independence (ZCPS) had been transforming by moving towards a correctional approach, which focuses more on rehabilitation.
“I commend the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services for its tireless efforts to advance prisons and correctional management systems thus aligning with its counterparts across Africa.
“Since Zimbabwe gained its independence, our prison system has undergone a transformative shift, adopting a correctional approach that prioritises rehabilitation and dignity,” he said.
Mutimurefu Prison had initiated innovative agricultural projects showcasing the potential for correctional facilities to contribute to national food security. To demonstrate commitment and acknowledgement of these initiatives during winter cropping season at Mutimurefu Prison they planted wheat.
“We must commend them for their hard work despite the effects of climate change.”
He said the prison produced 18,5 tonnes of maize, contributing to the national and provincial food security and is utilising the six boreholes which were drilled by the Government.
“We want to thank His Excellency the President of Zimbabwe Cde ED Mnangagwa and his able Government for drilling six boreholes at Mutimurefu to mitigate drought effects. They must look into the future with great determination as they prepare for the summer cropping season as we want a bumper harvest,” he said.
Chadzamira said the ZPCS is also in collaboration with civic and church organisations to ensure successful rehabilitation and reintegration of offenders.
“These partnerships have yielded positive outcomes through educational and vocational trainings, psychological support and family contact. “Rehabilitation programmes can significantly reduce crime rates and in line with this, the Government is committed to achieving correctional excellence.
