Vungu (New Ziana) – A state-of-the-art clinic has been built in Vungu district, Midlands province, bringing a sigh of relief to villagers in Ward 9 who previously walked long distances to access health care services.
The facility was built by the National AIDS Council (NAC) and co-operating partners.
The district comprises 19 wards with 27 health facilities, but Ward 9 had no such medical service centre.
Until now, villagers in the ward only accessed medical services either by walking long distances to health facilities or through periodic outreaches to the area by health teams.
As a result, people in the area suffered easily preventable illnesses and medical conditions such as maternal mortality, fatal snake bites and HIV transmission.
The area has a lot of artisanal miners, around whom prostitution thrive, and as a result, sex-related illnesses are prevalent. Mining-related accidents are also common in the area.
Construction of the clinic was overseen by Joint Hands Welfare Organisation (JHWO), one of the NAC’s project partners.
