Harare (New Ziana) – President Emerson Mnangagwa on Wednesday said the development trajectory which Zimbabwe has embarked on is irreversible and that government will implement bold strategies to achieve a modernised and industrialised economy.
He was addressing the 356th ordinary session of the Zanu PF politburo, which marked the beginning of the party’s 19th national people’s conference being held in Bindura, Mashonaland East province.
President Mnangagwa said the party and government should remain emboldened by the successes that have been achieved so far in pursuit of the development trajectory.
“We fought for independence and democracy and we must defend it at all times. In this context, I applaud all provinces and districts for clearly and resolutely opposing the hegemonic tendencies exhibited by some Western countries that have imposed illegal sanctions on our great country,” he said.
“Masvingo province is thus commended for hosting the SADC Anti-sanctions Day rally on Monday 25 October, 2021 at the sidelines of the commissioning of the Mapfura/Amarula value addition plant.
“This dovetails with the Second Republic’s exhortation that we should not bury our heads in the sand but stay on our irreversible course to modernise, industrialise and grow our economy.”
He urged Zanu PF to also tap into the unity of purpose and political consciousness among party cadres to defend and consolidate the gains of independence.
“Leveraging on the natural resource endowment, capabilities and skills, we must continue implementing bold strategies that will facilitate transformation in the quality of life of our people. In this context, the minimum of one district, one industry concept as enunciated in the Zimbabwe National Industrial Development policy and development of rural industry systems must be implemented throughout the country.
“Party structure across all provinces must take the lead and accelerate the programme as key actors in mobilising our people for increased production and productivity. The principal goal is ensuring our rural communities become centres of employment and tertiary production which export to towns, cities and the rest of the world. Through rural industrialisation, we must make rural areas attractive to live and work,” he said.
The Conference will enter its second day on Thursday with a Central Committee meeting in the capital before deliberations are taken to Bindura between Friday and Saturday.
The Central Committee will meet to adopt the final agenda of the conference and is also expected to discuss fundamental issues including preparations for the 2023 harmonised elections.
“As we approach the 2023 harmonised elections, our strategies must be precise, succinct and comprehensive,” said President Mnangagwa.
