New Kwekwe Mayor promises service delivery

KWEKWE – The new Mayor of Kwekwe Ward 14 councillor Albert Zinhanga has pledged to improve
service delivery and attract the much-needed investment in the city.

Cllr. Zinhanga was elected the new Mayor, taking over from Dr. Henry Madzorera who was recalled
last month alongside his deputy, Ward 5 councillor Melody Chingarande and councillor Simon
Machisvo by CCC Interim Secretary General Sengezo Tshabangu.

Chirangande was replaced by proportional representative Cllr Janet Ticharunga.
The new Mayor and his deputy took the oath of office before Kwekwe Town Clerk Dr Lucia Mkandhla
on Tuesday.

In his acceptance speech, Cllr. Zinhanga promised to improve service delivery and to come up with a
permanent solution to water challenges facing the city.

“I pledge to serve the residents to the best of my ability. I would need your support my fellow
councillors and management. You already have mine. It is my hope and pray that your role in our
beautiful city will encourage investment in the city, will increase accountability to the residents and
by large, improve service delivery. Service delivery can happen in our lifetime.

“The city and its residents need to focus on service delivery. This is the work that had already started
and is going to continue. We have made our contribution to the budget and we hope that the voice
of the residents would be heard and respected.

“The city is currently facing regular water outages. The residents are exposed to water shortages, we
are advocating for permanent water solutions. Together we can,” he said.

He said the recalling of councillors, especially female councillors, was a major blow to the operations
of council.

“… it should be noted that the only female councillor elected by residents was recalled. This leaves a
serious dent in our efforts to increase women participation in politics and leadership. I would like to
encourage women of age to consider community leadership roles and participate in politics. ..Your
community needs you,” said Mayor Zinhanga.

The new deputy Mayor Cllr. Ticharunga called for unity for the development of the city.

“The city can only develop if we councillors, management and residents are united. Let’s leave a
good name for ourselves in terms of service delivery so that we won’t be called all sorts of names by
the next generation. Our focus should be service delivery,” she said.
