Masvingo (New Ziana) -The police in Masvingo on Monday arrested Tafadzwa Kanengoni (39) who last Saturday shot dead a 41-year-old local tuck shop owner and stole an unspecified amount of money.
Kanengoni, who was on the police for a spate of armed robberies that he had committed in the city, was released from prison under the Presidential amnesty in November last year.
Masvingo police spokesperson Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa said Kanengoni demanded money from Michael Munhungowarwa who was packing up groceries at his tuck shop with his wife Martha Taguta (26) around 9 pm.
Munhungowarwa wrestled with Kanengoni before he was shot once in the chest. Kanengoni picked up the South African Rands which had scattered on the ground and walked away from the scene.
“The police had been carrying out investigations and caught up with Kanengoni in Kandodo Township in Zvishavane, the Midlands province, on 11 January and found a firearm amongst the recoveries.
“He is linked to four cases which are an unlawful entry in the Central Business District where he got away with a firearm, clothing, cell phones and memory sticks; robbery in Target Kopje where he stole US$500 and undergarments and the recent robbery and murder of Munhungowarwa.”
Insp Dhewa assured Masvingo residents that the police would continue to carry out their duties of investigating crimes.
“As police, we shall continue to execute our constitutional mandate of detecting and investigating crimes. Our people should be reassured. To those who want to live on the proceeds of crime be warned that Masvingo is not a safe haven for criminal activities,” he said.
