Harare, (New Ziana)- More than 26 000 prepaid smart water meters have been installed in the capital under the government-led Harare Water Project, being implemented in partnership with Helcraw, and aimed at improving water supply and accuracy in billing.
Being implemented through a public-private-partnership, the initiative combines the replacement of ageing water reticulation infrastructure with the rollout of prepaid metering systems.
The project has been widely adopted in suburbs including Warren Park, Ashdown Park and New Marimba, effectively ending the City of Harare’s reliance on estimated billing.
In an update, the City of Harare said so far, at least 26 000 water meters have been installed in the capital.
“At least 26 000 water meters have been installed in Harare to date. The City of Harare continues to install smart water meters and replace old water pipes with new ones,” it said.
The local authority said it is currently installing prepaid smart water meters at the Aspindale Park.
“Water meters will ultimately result in more water for residents as people will only be able to pay for what they use. This means we save water to distribute to areas with shortages. The smart water meters have proved popular with residents,” it explained.
The prepaid system is also being adopted in other cities and towns, including Karoi, Hwange, Guruve and Gokwe, where it is improving billing efficiency while supporting the delivery of clean and safe water.
