Harare, (New Ziana) – The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has launched an investigation into a disturbing video circulating widely on social media showing a schoolgirl, dressed in full school uniform, allegedly smoking what appears to be dagga during a birthday celebration.
In the video, which has sparked outrage and concern among parents and the general public, the young girl is seen holding what resembles a rolled cigarette, inhaling and exhaling smoke, while fellow students — also in school uniforms — cheer her on.
The group can be heard singing the traditional “Happy Birthday” song, clapping and laughing in the background, seemingly unbothered by the activity taking place.
The identity of the school, the students involved, and the exact location remain unclear. Police spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, confirmed that authorities were aware of the video and have begun looking into the incident.
“The ZRP has taken note of a viral video in which a schoolgirl, dressed in school uniform, is seen smoking what appears to be dagga during a purported birthday celebration, with other students in the background singing a happy birthday song. Investigations are in progress,” he said.
He urged members of the public who may have information that could assist with the investigation to come forward and report at any nearest police station.
