Harare (New Ziana) – Police said on Thursday investigations were underway to establish how a Zupco bus was involved in a fatal collision with a fuel tanker near Kwekwe was traveling after a Covid-19 curfew hours at night.

The bus accident killed eight people and injured 31 others on Wednesday after colliding with a fuel tanker at the 168km peg along the Harare- Bulawayo road between midnight and 0100 hours.

This is despite the fact that Zimbabwe is under a COVID-19 induced curfew from 10pm to 6AM as part of regulations put to contain the spread of the pandemic.

Ass Comm Nyathi said police are keen to understand how the bus was cleared to travel during restricted hours.

“Operators should not wait to be arrested. It is in the interest of everyone, interest of the country, interest of the maintenance of order for people to just comply with curfew regulations.

” There is no need to be complacent or arrogant because when accidents happen, they affect all of us.

” So we are conducting investigations, ” he said.

Zupco chief executive Evaristo Madangwa said the company was also doing internal investigations.

“We are not supposed to travel during curfew hours. Disciplinary action will be taken,” he said.
