Harare (New Ziana) — Police have arrested two people over suspected illegal possession of marijuana, a controlled drug.

Possession, use and consumption of the drug is restricted in the country, mainly to medical institutions. Unauthorised dealing in the drug is outlawed.

Police said last Friday, law enforcement officers in Beitbridge arrested Melusi Nwenya after allegedly finding him in illegal possession of 16 kilogrammes of marijuana concealed in a cardbox where he had also stored chicken cuts.

In a similar case, police in Featherstone intercepted and arrested Tinashe Muronzi and Anacleter Sibanda after allegedly also finding them in illegal possession of six plastic bags of marijuana.

The arrests come in the wake of worsening drug abuse and addiction in the country, especially among youths. This has prompted the authorities to order a crackdown on the menace, targeting mainly suppliers and consumers.
