Harare, (New Ziana) – President Emmerson Mnangagwa has appointed Geo Pomona Waste Management Company executive chairperson, and chief executive officer, Dr Dilesh Nguwaya, as Special Advisor to the President on Waste Management and Environmental Sustainability.
The appointment was announced in a statement issued by the chief secretary to the President and Cabinet, Dr Martin Rushwaya, who said the decision recognises Dr Nguwaya’s exceptional contribution to environmental protection, sustainable waste management, recycling and the promotion of a circular economy.
“Dr Nguwaya has demonstrated visionary leadership in overseeing Geo Pomona Waste Management Company, delivering significant environmental, social and economic benefits,” he said.
The appointment comes as the country continues to intensify efforts to modernize waste management systems, improve environmental sustainability and promote cleaner, healthier communities in line with the country’s development agenda.
Dr Nguwaya has been at the helm of Geo Pomona Waste Management Company, which operates the Geo Pomona Waste-to-Energy project in Harare, since inception.
The facility was established to transform the former Pomona dumpsite into a modern waste management centre through scientific waste disposal, recycling, and electricity generation from waste.
The project has been positioned as a key component of Zimbabwe’s transition towards a circular economy, reducing reliance on traditional landfill disposal while creating opportunities for renewable energy production, environmental conservation, and job creation.
The latest appointment is expected to strengthen policy coordination and strategic guidance on waste management and environmental sustainability at the highest level of Government, as the country seeks to expand green initiatives and climate resilience.
