President Mnangagwa arrives in Mozambique

Maputo (New Ziana) – President Emmerson Mnangagwa has arrived in Mozambique for talks with other Southern African Development Community (Sadc) leaders on the deteriorating security situation in that country.

Mozambique is battling a growing Islamist insurgency in the north of the country which has resulted in the death of tens of thousands, and displacement of hundreds of thousands others.

The insurgency, around the gas-rich Cabo Delgado region, is gaining in momentum, and now threatens to spread to some of Mozambique’s neighbours.

It is this which has prompted SADC to weigh various options to assist Mozambique, a member state, to deal with the insurgency, including military assistance.

At Monday’s one-day meeting, President Mnangagwa will join other leaders from Botswana, South Africa and the host country, who collectively make up the current Sadc Troika on Politics Defence and Security Cooperation, in the talks.

The meeting follows another by the group in Botswana late last month on the same issue.

Increasingly, SADC is leaning towards a collective military option to the insurgency.
