Maphisa, (New Ziana) – President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Saturday called for sustained national unity, saying it was a key catalyst for accelerating national development.

He made these remarks while addressing thousands of people who thronged Maphisa Stadium in Matobo District, Matebeleland South, to commemorate the the country’s 46th Independence Day celebrations.

This year’s Uhuru commemorations ran under the theme: “Zimbabwe at 46: Unity and Development towards Vision 2030.”

President Mnangagwa said the country’s independence was born out of the collective sacrifices of liberation war fighters who transcended ethnic and regional divisions.

“We gather here to celebrate yet another historic milestone as we mark our 46th Independence Anniversary. The armed struggle for independence was executed by all Zimbabweans who rose above ethnic and regional lines. Their courage, resilience and fortitude delivered the freedom and democracy we enjoy today,” he said.

He paid tribute to liberation war heroes and heroines, particularly those from Matabeleland South Province, describing the region as a key theatre during the liberation struggle.

“Many areas in this province stand as enduring reminders of the brutality of colonialism and the heroism of our people. We shall forever honour and salute our veterans of the armed liberation struggle for their bravery and sacrifice,” he said.

The country attained independence from British colonial rule on April 18, 1980, following a protracted liberation war.

Independence commemorations are held in different provinces as part of the Second Republic’s decentralisation drive aimed at promoting inclusive national development.

Turning to the economy, President Mnangagwa said Zimbabwe continues to register positive growth despite global economic challenges.

“Our economy is recording commendable growth. Foreign currency inflows have increased significantly, largely driven by strong performance in the mining sector, particularly gold,” he said.

He added that government reforms had led to macroeconomic stability, with inflation declining to single digits earlier this year, while exchange rate stability has been supported by rising export earnings and diaspora remittances.

On the agriculture sector, President Mnangagwa said the country is on a firm path towards food security following a successful farming season.

“This year’s agricultural season has been highly productive, with grain output exceeding national requirements. This achievement underscores the success of our food security strategies and the resilience of our farmers,” he said.

He noted that investments in grain storage infrastructure and strategic reserves are being scaled up to safeguard national food security.

President Mnangagwa also commended the financial sector for supporting economic activity, while urging stakeholders to enhance financial inclusion across all communities.

The 46th Independence celebrations here drew thousands of people from across the country, including senior government officials, diplomats, and ordinary citizens, in a show of national unity and pride.
