Harare, (New Ziana)- The Constitution of Zimbabwe (Amendment) Act (Number 3 ) of 2026 on Tuesday officially became law following Presidential assent and subsequent publication in the Government Gazette.

The new law introduces several legal and structural adjustments to the country’s national governance framework including the extension of Zimbabwe’s electoral cycle from five to seven years and also removes direct presidential elections and replaces it with a parliamentary vote.

The law passed both houses of Parliament, with the lower House approving final amendments last week.

Other provisions of the law include that the Attorney-General must meet the qualifications of a Supreme Court judge and also allows the President to appoint 10 more senators, increasing the Senate from 80 to 90 members.

In line with the new Act, voter registration moves from the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission to the Registrar-General, while a new commission will oversee constituency and ward delimitation.

The Act also removes public interviews for judicial appointments while a Vice-President can act as President until Parliament elects a replacement within 30 days.

A new office of Judge President of the Supreme Court has also been created among other provisions.
