Harare, (New Ziana) – President Emmerson Mnangagwa was due to preside over a Children’s Party on Friday at Mahetshe Primary School in Matabeleland South province, to kick off 46th independence celebrations across the country.

The event comes ahead of independence day celebrations on Saturday, to be held in Maphisa under the theme: ‘Zimbabwe at 46: Unity in Action, Development in Motion, Towards Vision 2030.’

The selection of the venue aligns with the Government’s ongoing policy to decentralise major national events. This approach underscores the government’s commitment to inclusivity and national cohesion by ensuring that different regions across the country share in hosting key occasions.

A cornerstone of Zimbabwe’s Independence Day programme, the Children’s Party provides a platform for young people to gain a deeper understanding of the country’s history and their role in shaping its future.

It also reflects the nation’s commitment to nurturing its youth and promoting their active participation in national milestones.

Speaking during a recent post-Cabinet briefing, the Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Soda Zhemu, said preparations for the celebrations, including key infrastructure developments, were well on track.

Minister Zhemu also outlined plans for the Children’s Party.

“The Children’s Party is scheduled for 17 April 2026 at Mahetshe Primary School, with 3 050 child delegates expected to participate. President Emmerson Mnangagwa will host the event,” he said.

Regarding other symbolic activities, the Independence Torch relay began on 10 April 2026, marked by the lighting of the flame at Zezane Assembly Point by Vice President Constantino Chiwenga.

The torch has since passed through several districts and is expected to be received on Friday at Ratanyana Liberation Site before proceeding to Maphisa.

Meanwhile, approximately 5 000 people are expected to attend Independence celebrations at St Aidan School in Chitungwiza.

The Minister of State for Harare Metropolitan Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Charles Tawengwa, is expected to officiate at the event.

Last year, the province commemorated Independence Day in Epworth.
