Kwekwe (New Ziana) – President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Friday reiterated government calls for the public to go for booster Covid-19 jabs to enhance their protection against the raging pandemic.
Covid-19 cases have spiked in the country in recent weeks in the aftermath of the outbreak of the Omicron variant late November.
“In light of the present surge in Covid-19 infections, I urge those who have not yet been vaccinated to do so,” he said.
“We have a lot of vaccines. After realising that we are under sanctions, and when the world was hit by Covid-19, the World Bank, IMF, big countries put monies together which they gave to other Third World countries and we were not given, we met as government and agreed that we will determine our own destiny, hence we removed money from other projects for the procurement of vaccines, we now have a lot of vaccines, if you want the third shot go and be inoculated, we have a surplus of vaccines,” said President Mnangagwa.
The government has been leading calls for the public to get vaccinated against Covid-19, which has infected and killed millions around the world.
As at 06 January 2022, Zimbabwe had 220 178 confirmed cases, including 191 000 recoveries and 5 108 deaths.
To date, a total of 4 153 879 people have been vaccinated against COVID-19.
President Mnangagwa made the call during the first 2022 national clean up campaign in Kwekwe on Friday.
