Harare, (New Ziana) – President Emmerson Mnangagwa has called on world leaders to reaffirm their commitment to safeguarding wetlands, emphasizing their crucial role in sustaining biodiversity, climate resilience and water security.

Wetlands, often referred to as the “kidneys of the landscape,” act as natural filters, improving water quality and providing essential habitats for countless species.

In a statement marking World Wetlands Day, commemorated annually on 2 February, President Mnangagwa highlighted the importance of these ecosystems in the context of the upcoming 15th Conference of Contracting Parties to the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands.

He urged countries to endorse their commitment to preserving wetland ecosystems, which are increasingly threatened by climate change, urbanization and pollution.

“In the run-up to COP 15, it is time to reaffirm our commitment to protect these essential ecosystems. Wetlands are not just natural resources – they are foundational to our shared future. Let’s come together to protect and restore them, ensuring their benefits for generations to come,” he said.

This year the commemorations hold particular significance as Zimbabwe prepares to host the COP 15 in Victoria Falls from July 23 to 31.

The event will bring together representatives from various nations and organizations to discuss strategies for wetland conservation and sustainable management.

Through concerted efforts and renewed commitments, leaders have the opportunity to protect these invaluable ecosystems, ensuring they continue to provide their myriad benefits for future generations.
