Prominent lawyer Moyo dies

Harare, (New Ziana) – Prominent local lawyer, Sternford Moyo, died on Friday after a short illness, aged 68.

Moyo held many legal leadership positions in the country, and outside, among them as President of the Law Society of Zimbabwe, and as the first black President of the International Bar Association (IBA).

At the time of his death, he was chairman and senior partner at Scanlen and Holderness, one of the biggest law firms in the country.

In a condolence message, the Law Society of Zimbabwe said Moyo’s death had left the legal profession, and country as a whole, poorer. He was President of the Law Society of Zimbabwe from 2000 to 2004.

“It is with a heavy sense of grief and loss that the Law Society of Zimbabwe informs you of the untimely passing on of former President Sternford Moyo,” the society said.

“Mr Moyo represents a rare breed of legal practitioners and business leaders who have blazed a trail on the global stage.”

After serving as President of the Law Society of Zimbabwe, Moyo went on to lead the Southern African Development Community Lawyers’ Association, and also held the positions of chairperson of Stanbic Bank Zimbabwe Limited, Schweppes Zimbabwe Limited, Delta Corporation and of the Human Rights Institute of the IBA, among other numerous posts.

Moyo was born in 1956, and was admitted as a legal practitioner in 1982. He is survived by his wife, Sarah and three children.
