Harare(New Ziana) – Registrar General Clemence Masango was arrested late on Wednesday on allegations of criminal abuse of office and flouting tender procedures involving procurement of vehicles.

He was picked up by officers from the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (Zacc), and was believed to be detained at Malbereign police station in Harare.

His arrest follows reports he retained for personal use several vehicles which had been bought by the Registrar General’s Department for deployment to its provincial branches.

The acquisition of the vehicles is also believed to have been in violation of the country’s state procurement laws.

Zacc confirmed the arrest, and Masango will appear in court shortly to answer to the charges.

He becomes the latest in a lengthening list of top officials to be nabbed by Zacc for graft.
