Harare (New Ziana)–The Southern African Development Community (SADC) was on Monday expected to convene a virtual Extraordinary Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation (Organ Troika) chaired by Malawi.
In a statement, the SADC secretariat said the Malawi Vice President Enoch Chihana was expected to chair the virtual Summit on behalf of President Peter Mtharika, who is the current Organ chairperson.
The SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation is mandated to safeguard peace and stability across the region.
Its responsibilities include conflict prevention, management and resolution, while upholding democratic principles, protecting human rights and preserving the sovereignty and territorial integrity of member states.
The Organ Troika comprises Malawi as the chair, the Kingdom of Eswatini as the incoming chair and Tanzania as the outgoing chair.
The virtual Summit was expected to deliberate on critical regional peace and security issues, reinforcing the commitment of SADC to conflict prevention, democratic governance, human rights, regional integration, and sustainable development.
It was expected to be preceded by sessions of Senior Officials and the Ministerial Committee of the Organ (MCO) on the same day.
These preparatory meetings were expected to provide a platform for in-depth deliberations, underscoring the commitment of SADC to peace, security and regional integration.
