MUTARE- Renovations at the abolished home of football in Mutare, Sakubva
Stadium are well on course with the pitch receiving its first 1000 square meters
of new turf.
This comes soon after the completion of the vertical drainage system with the
new turf project expected to be completed within two weeks’ time.
According to the local authority, the renovation works are going according to
plan as council slowly moves towards restoring Sakubva Stadium to soccer
body approved standards.
“The contractor has since completed the vertical drainage. The profile of the
vertical drainage entails that there is bedding sand at the bottom where
perforated drainage pipes have been laid on top of it. These pipes are covered
by a layer of three quarter stones covered with filter sand. The stadium has 16
trunk drainage lines and an additional 20 auxiliary branching lines of perforated
pipes interconnecting the trunk lines,” said Mutare city spokesperson, Spren
Mutiwi.
Sakubva Stadium was condemned for its rugged and bumpy turf and
substandard goal posts which were a risk to the safety of players.
The piece work repairs that the local authority had put in to the football pitch
over the years were unsustainable resulting on the momentous decision to carry
out the major renovations and repairs works in one chunk.
This resulted in matches being played at Vengere Stadium in Rusape during the
rehabilitation period.
Sakubva Stadium is home ground for Mutare’s top premier league teams
Manica Diamonds and Tenax.
