Harare, (New Ziana) – Schools will re-open only for 2020 end of year final examinations from the September 14, the government said on Tuesday.

Those not writing final examinations will continue to learn from home.

Government closed schools in March, towards the end of the first term, due to the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, which has wrecked havoc globally.

And while some countries have written off the 2020 school year, the Zimbabwean government has allowed students in their final years, primarily Grade 7s, form fours and sixes to proceed with the exams.

Some of the students wrote their final mid-year exams in June.

Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Monica Mutsvangwa told journalists schools writing the United Kingdom based Cambridge examinations will open first followed by those writing locally set exams.

“The schools opening dates are scheduled for 14 September 2020 for Cambridge examinations classes and 28 September 2020 for Zimsec examination classes,” Mutsvangwa said.

“Cabinet approved that the Zimsec Examinations should start on 1 December, 2020. The ministry (of Primary and Secondary Education) is working closely with other ministries and stakeholders to guarantee the safety of pupils and staff during the examinations period.”

Mutsvangwa said the dates had been set as government continues to gather input from players in the education sector on the way forward.

“Fifteen stakeholders have submitted their inputs and another nine are expected to make their submissions shortly,” she said.
