ZIMBABWEAN champions Scottland FC face a daunting hurdle in their bid to reach the group stage of the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League, having been drawn against Angolan giants Atlético Petróleos de Luanda in the second preliminary round.
Scottland secured their passage to the second round on Saturday by holding Eswatini champions Nsingizini Hotspurs to a goalless draw in the return leg, progressing 1-0 on aggregate thanks to Neville Tengeg’s decisive strike in the first leg.
Their reward is a meeting with one of the most decorated clubs on the continent. Petro de Luanda boasts a record 20 Girabola titles, including the 2025/26 championship, and has also won the league five consecutive times, underlining their dominance in domestic football.
Founded in 1980, Petro quickly established itself as a force in Angolan football, winning its first league title in 1982. The club plays its home matches at the 11 de Novembro Stadium in Luanda and has considerable experience in continental competitions.
The tie therefore represents a major examination of Scottland’s credentials on the continental stage, particularly as the club is making its debut in the CAF Champions League.
Scottland coach Norman Mapeza has already demonstrated a cautious approach to the club’s maiden continental campaign, insisting that his players must remain focused and improve in key areas as they navigate the competition.
The Zimbabwean champions will now need to produce another disciplined performance against Petro and find greater attacking penetration if they are to eliminate the Angolan powerhouse.
For Scottland, however, the prize is enormous.
Victory over Petro across the two legs would send the Harare-based side into the CAF Champions League group stage — a significant milestone for the club and Zimbabwean football.
It would also provide Scottland with an opportunity to test themselves against some of Africa’s leading clubs on one of the continent’s biggest stages.
The encounter promises to be a stern test of Scottland’s ambition, with Petro’s pedigree, continental experience, and formidable domestic record making them clear favourites on paper.
But after overcoming their first preliminary-round challenge against Nsingizini, Scottland will hope their historic continental journey can continue with another landmark result.
