Harare (New Ziana) –The High Court on circuit in Gweru, the Midlands province, has jailed a 36-year-old man from Shurugwi for murdering an elderly woman after accusing her of insulting him.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ), Prosper Sitshebo was convicted of murder and robbery.
The State case was that Sitshebo, who was armed with a machete, confronted his 67-year-old victim on the night of September 2, 2021 around 1 AM and accused her of insulting him.
The elderly woman, who was sleeping with her three grandchildren, was alerted of Sitshebo’s approach by her eldest grandchild who had woken up to breastfeed her baby when she heard footsteps, and noticed a torch light approaching the hut in which they were sleeping.
When he entered the woman’s bedroom, Sitshebo, who was armed with a machete and knife, indicated that he had come to exact revenge for insulting him sometime back.
He struck the elderly woman with a machete on the left ankle before disarming her of a machete that she had pulled from under her bed. The woman fell to the ground as she bled profusely and died from the injury.
Sitshebo then took US$100, Itel and KG Tel mobile phones from the house before force marching the eldest granddaughter to a nearby bush where he intended to rape her.
He only stopped when she told him that she had recently given birth and

A Police report was made leading to his arrest the following day.
Separately the same court jailed Elivanos Shoko (22) of Gwatidza village in Mberengwa, under chief Mketi, to 23 years imprisonment for the murder of a 61-year-old man after accusing him of stealing his phone.
The incident happened on last December 23 when Shoko met his victim walking with another man.
He slapped the deceased who picked up a stone which he threw at Shoko.
Shoko charged at his victim and grabbed him by the neck, drew an okapi knife which he used to stab his victim on the chest before fleeing the scene.
Meanwhile a 64-year-old man from Beitbridge will spend the next eight months in prison for beating up his wife for allegedly preparing breakfast late.
According to the NPAZ, the Beitbridge magistrates’ court convicted the man from Zezani village of physical abuse and sentenced him to 24 months imprisonment, conditionally suspending eight months and leaving him to serve an effective eight months.
The charges against the man arose from an incident on October 5 around 8AM when the man returned home from a memorial service in Zezani village and requested his wife (58) to prepare breakfast.
While waiting for the food, he went to Zezani Business Centre and on return, began shouting at the complainant, accusing her of intentionally delaying breakfast preparation.
The man then physically assaulted the complainant with a stick, striking her all over her body. He further assaulted her on the head with a stone, causing an open wound and severe swelling.
The NPAZ urged members of the public to desist from violence and resolve their disputes amicably or seek third party mediation.
In Mutare, the magistrates’ court jailed Tinotenda Bhandiroto (25) of Sakubva high density suburb to five years imprisonment for attempted murder.
According to the NPAZ, on June 18 this year, the man demanded US$2 which the complainant owed him and was told him that he did not have it.
This did not go well with the accused person who broke an empty beer bottle which he used to stab the complainant once on the back of the neck and once under the chin, inflicting deep cuts.
