Harare (New Ziana) – Six miners drowned at Lilian Mine in Inyathi village, Nkayi district in Matabeleland North province on Thursday after the shaft in which they were working flooded when drillers hit underground water, police have said.
Eight other miners managed to escape the flood which trapped them while they were extracting gold ore. The bodies of the deceased have since been retrieved.
Meanwhile the police are appealing for information which may lead to the arrest of Saratoga Masere of Harare who is wanted in connection with a case of murder and three cases of attempted murder which occurred at a house in Lochinvar.
“Deno Mpofu died on admission at Sally Mugabe Hospital,” said the police in a twitter thread.
“The suspect also stabbed the victim’s son, Kim Mpofu (16), before stabbing a police officer who had tried to subdue him. The two are currently admitted at a local hospital.”
Masere had previously attacked his father, 71-year-old Count Munyaradzi Masere with a log on Wednesday. The elderly man was subsequently taken to the Sally Mugabe Hospital for treatment.
In a separate incident, the police reported the arrest of 19 students and youths at a Dzivarasekwa Extension house where they were about to start a sex party.
Some of the students were from Corridors of Hope College and neighbouring schools. Also arrested was the house caretaker, Pride Nyamugafata (20).
