Harare, (New Ziana) – The Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) on Thursday allowed 24 low contact sports to resume
activities following the easing of Covid-19 lockdown restrictions by government.

The sports, however exclude soccer, the most popular sport in the country.

Government on Monday lifted major restrictions that blocked unnecessary movement and allowed social gatherings up to 50 people to resume.

The SRC said sports including archery, cricket, golf, chess, draft, table tennis, cycling, rowling, polo, shooting and swimming could resume.

Tennis, horse racing, badmington, lawn bowls, triathlon, woodball, motosports, rowing, archery, angling, shooting and equestrian were also given the green light.

In line with the directive, the SRC said sports associations allowed to resume activities must follow “their previously approved Covid-19 protocols taking into account the national and World Health Organisation guidelines.”

The SRC said bars and changing rooms operated at the sporting facilities must remain closed while restaurants are only allowed to open for takeways only.

Resumption of low risk sports follows a decline in new cases of Covid-19 infections in the country in the last few weeks.

A number of soccer players, including those playing for the national team, the Warriors, were infected but recovered after taking part in tournaments.

Zimbabwe has since last year recorded 36 179 cases of infection and 1 478 deaths.
