Harare (New Ziana) – Toll fees can now be paid in foreign currency or equivalent at the prevailing auction rate, the government announced on Friday.
In a government gazette, the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development pegged toll fees for light motor vehicles at USD2, minibuses at USD3, buses at USD4, heavy vehicles at USD5 and haulage trucks atUSD10.
“Toll fees for foreign registered vehicles shall be payable in United States Dollars or equivalent in other foreign currencies using the above rates,” read part of the gazette.
“The fees stipulated in section 2 above may be payable in local currency at the foreign currency auction rate in terms of the exchange control (exclusive use of the Zimbabwe dollar for domestic transactions).”
The Zimbabwe government introduced toll gates in 2009 to raise funds for road infrastructure repair and maintenance.
It has since installed toll gates on all the country’s highways.
Toll fees are the second largest revenue generating source for the Zimbabwe National Road Authority (Zinara) after vehicle license fees.
There are 26 operational tollgates in Zimbabwe, nine of which are plaza models, which are highly sophisticated tollgates that are computerized to minimize pilferage.
In 2018, Zinara collected $41.3 million from toll fees, up from $37.4 million in 2017.
