Harare (New Ziana)-At least 21 people died of Covid-19 in Zimbabwe on Monday, bringing the cumulative tally since the onset of the pandemic to 528, the Ministry of Health and Child Care has said.

The deaths were reported in Harare (12), Bulawayo (1), Manicaland (2), Mashonaland Central (3), Mashonaland East (2) and Masvingo (1).

In a daily update, the Ministry said a cumulative 820 Covid-19 infections were also recorded on the same day, all of which are local community transmitted.

Of the total new infections, 385 were from Harare.

“As of 11 January 2021, Zimbabwe has now recorded 22 297 cases, 13 213 recoveries and 528 deaths,” said the Ministry.

In light of the surge in Covid-19 cases, the Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe said people who were not travelling were no longer allowed to disembark from vehicles at the airport.

“In light of the recent spike in Covid-19 cases, the non-travelling publics are now prohibited from disembarking from their vehicles as they drop off or pick up passengers except when accompanying passengers with reduced mobility,” it said.

The development comes as the government announced that the country’s airports would remain operational during the 30- day Covid-19 lockdown period.
