Harare(New Ziana)-Two men believed to have shot and killed an army officer and seriously injured another in Chivhu on Saturday before getting away with security service riffles, have been killed after a shootout with law enforcement agents, police said on Sunday.

The Zimbabwe National Army officers were part of security details deployed in Chivhu to monitor compliance with the Covid-19 regulations.

Zimbabwe Republic Police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the two suspects died after a shootout with law enforcement agents as they attempted to resist arrest.

“The suspects were hiding in a mountain at Waterberry farm which Is ward 8 Chivhu off Chivhu –Gutu road. And when they observed an investigation team which was approaching, they descended from the mountain and hid in a trench after trying to run away. They exchanged fire with the security service officers. They shot one security service officer who was injured on the leg.

“In the subsequent fire, the suspects were seriously injured and they were taken to Chivhu General Hospital where they were pronounced dead on arrival,” he said.

Nyathi said two security service firearms were recovered.

He warned the public against taking part in criminal activities aimed at destabilising the prevailing peaceful environment in the country.

“We reiterate that any unruly element, any criminal element who would try to disturb the peace which currently exists in the country with a view of causing alarm, despondency will certainly be dealt with in terms of the county’s laws,” he said.
