Harare, (New Ziana) -Uganda Airlines will starting in August this year be operating a dedicated Airbus A320 cargo flight for the southern African region in a significant step towards enhancing regional trade and air logistics.

Uganda Airlines country manager for Zimbabwe, Derrick Ouma made the announcement during a presentation at the Catalyst Enhanced Trade and Investment Between Zimbabwe and Regional Markets (ZimTrade 2025) Uganda, Mozambique-Beira, and Equatorial Guinea dissemination seminar on Monday.

“This Airbus A320 has a fairly larger capacity for the region right now. It is  a simple, efficient type of aircraft that will boost cargo operations across southern Africa,” he said.

He explained that the airline currently operates two Airbus A320s with a base cargo capacity of 25 tons and four regional jets capable of carrying up to 1 574 passengers.

The addition of the new Airbus cargo flight represents a strategic move to meet growing logistics demands and expand Uganda Airlines’ presence in regional freight services.

“In the long term, we have plans to add six more aircraft for cargo, which we had already prepared for. Unfortunately, our logistics were delayed due to global competition. India’s purchase of 500 aircrafts affected the availability and timeline of our order.”

Uganda Airlines is also positioning itself as a key aviation player not just in East Africa, but across the continent and beyond.

The airline currently serves destinations such as Dubai and Bombay, and has set its sights on expanding to cities like Vancouver, Victoria Falls, and Cape Town.

In addition to passenger and cargo flights, Uganda Airlines offers a range of aviation-related services including courier solutions, animal transport, and ground handling through Aviation Grant Services (AGS).

The airline however, does not yet handle radioactive materials due to the absence of regulatory guidelines in both Uganda and Rwanda.

“Our services are comprehensive. We transport passengers and cargo, provide ground handling through AGS, and support logistics for international conferences and events,” Ouma said.

He also highlighted Uganda’s growing capacity to absorb and process goods, particularly for countries like Zimbabwe looking to expand their trade links within the continent.
