Harare (New Ziana) – President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Tuesday appointed Vice President General Constantino Chiwenga as the new Minister of Health and Child care with immediate effect.

VP Chiwenga replaces Dr Obadiah Moyo who was fired last month for conduct not consistent with the office of a Cabinet Minister.

Dr Moyo is currently embroiled in a Covid-19 tender scandal involving millions of dollars.

In a statement, the chief secretary to the President and Cabinet Dr Misheck Sibanda said the appointment was made in terms of section 99 of the Constitution.

“In making this decision, His Excellency the President has noted the urgent need to stabilise, restructure and reform the national health delivery system to better cope with challenges of the global Covid-19 pandemic and in the process ensuring a quick turn-around in national health care,” he said.

On Monday, President Mnangagwa also appointed Dr Jasper Chimedza as the new permanent secretary for the Ministry.
