Zanu PF congress to set tone for 2023 electoral victory: ED

Harare (New Ziana) – The 7th Zanu PF national people’s congress is expected to consolidate unity and democracy within the ruling party and set it on course towards securing an overwhelming governing mandate in next year’s general elections, President Emmerson Mnangagwa said on Wednesday.

He said this while opening the Zanu PF politburo meeting on the first day of the ruling party’s October 26-29 congress.

President Mnangagwa said the congress was a culmination of the successful elective conferences of the Youth and Women’s Leagues as well as the inaugural War Veterans’ League Conference held during the course of this year.

These conferences, he said, served as critical building blocks for the rejuvenation, renewal and growth of the revolutionary mass party, Zanu PF.

“We are a party for the people and from the people; hence, this 7th National People’s Congress must consolidate our intra-party unity and democracy towards the rejuvenation of our revolutionary party, and also for the accelerated modernisation, industrialisation of our great country and equally, now is the opportune time to sharpen comprehensive strategies for a resounding victory in the forthcoming 2023 Harmonised General Elections,” he said.

And, in spite of several obstacles thrown in its path, including sanctions, the Zanu PF party and government continued to deliver on its mandate to the people.

“In spite of the deleterious impact of sanctions, the Zanu PF government is moving ahead in delivering the promises we made to leapfrog the development of our beloved motherland, Zimbabwe. The party is vibrant and alive. We are a train that cannot be stopped. Since our last meeting, I presided over graduation ceremonies at Bindura University of Science Education, Harare Institute of Technology as well as the Great Zimbabwe University, which all continue to exhibit unprecedented ingenuity, innovation and academic excellence.”

President Mnangagwa said the results of the by-elections held over the weekend were a clear demonstration that Zanu PF remained unstoppable and that its victory was certain in the 2023 elections.

He said the party was bracing for a resounding victory next year, buoyed by the party’s unrelenting efforts in implementing high impact, people oriented and broad-based empowerment policies and programmes.

He said the ruling party was committed to ensuring that Zimbabwe grew its own food, manufactures its own clothes, as well as constructs its own roads, dams, schools and clinics.

“Zanu PF is the only party with a rich revolutionary heritage, as such, we should sustain the weighty responsibility of ensuring that our party is driven by the vision and ideological foundation enunciated in our constitution towards the emancipation of our people.

“In this regard, corruption, opportunism, nepotism and all other such vices at whatever level, must be expunged.”

President Mnangagwa added: “In whatever portfolios the party assigns us in the future, let us maintain the momentum we have demonstrated to date, while at the same time providing appropriate guidance to the lower structures of the party.

“No matter our portfolios in the future, let us remain unflinching and consistent as loyal, patriotic and committed members of Zanu PF, emboldened by the fact that in our party, leaders at every level are servants of the people. As such the most important position in Zanu PF is to be a card-carrying member.”

Meanwhile, President Mnangagwa commended the Southern African Development Community for continuing to fight in Zimbabwe’s corner against illegal sanctions imposed on the country by the West.

SADC declared October 25 a day it collectively campaigns against the sanctions.

Several African countries outside SADC and others including China and Russia have also joined in the sanctions fight.

The ruling party’s congress, which is moving to Central Committee stage on Thursday, is also expected to endorse results of the recently concluded Central Committee Elections.
