Shurugwi (New Ziana) – Ruling ZANU-PF officials in the Midlands Province said on Tuesday an estimated 300 000 supporters were expected to attend President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s final provincial star rally in Shurugwi next week.
Hectic preparations are already underway for the rally, expected to be the biggest in turnout terms, at Tongogara Business Centre in Shurugwi on August 19.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa, who is vying for a second term in office, has been holding provincial star rallies throughout the country in the last few weeks to canvass for support in the August 23 vote.
His final star rally will be in Shurugwi, his home area, and party officials said indications showed a possible turnout of around 300 000.
Themed around peace and development, his rallies have drawn huge crowds wherever he has gone so far, which officials said was a good pointer to the outcome of the elections.
ZANU-PF Midlands provincial chairperson, and Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Larry Mavima said President Mnangagwa will also officially commission Tongogara Clinic on the day.
The clinic was built using devolution funds which government has disbursed to local authorities throughout the country to invest in projects and programmes of their choice.
“This is a clinic that was initially funded by, or through, devolution funds as well as funds the Rural District Council itself sourced and put into the project. However, it is important to note and mention that the final construction of this building was done by the Zimbabwe Defence Forces as part of their community service,” Mavima said.
