Harare (New Ziana) – The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) has extended its ongoing final voter registration exercise by five days following a public outcry over the slow pace at which it was going.

ZEC embarked on the final voter registration and awareness campaign last Sunday and had scheduled to finish it on Tuesday next week.

“The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) would like to advice the public that the voter registration blitz and voter education has been extended by 5 days,” it said in a statement.

Earlier this week the commission had indicated that power outages which the country was experiencing, and the rains were affecting the exercise.

It therefore wants to use the extension to make up for lost time and missed registrations as it will afford citizens more time to go to their nearest registration centres.

In addition, the extension will afford the Commission more time to educate the public on the importance of voting as some people had not bothered to check whether they were registered.
