Harare (New Ziana) -The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission has delayed announcing the final list of candidates that successfully filed nomination papers for the various constituencies around the country to accommodate those experiencing challenges relating to the banking system.
In a statement on Thursday, chief elections officer Utoile Silaigwana denied reports that ZEC had disqualified prospective candidates from lodging their nominations papers because of difficulties experienced in effecting payment of nomination fees due to challenges within the banking system including bank limits and payment methods.
“In view of this, the Commission is calling upon all candidates and parties whose nomination papers had been submitted but had challenges with the Commission’s point of sale machines and those who had submitted proof of payments but funds not reflecting in ZEC’s account to approach the respective nominations courts wherein their papers were lodged and make the necessary payments or get confirmation of said payment no later than 1700hrs on 22 June 2023,” he said.
Silaigwana said ZEC wanted to be as accommodative and inclusive as possible to enable Zimbabwean voters to exercise their cherished democratic rights.
The Nomination Court to register candidates seeking to contest in all seats available during the August 23 harmonised elections were scheduled to sit from 10AM to 4PM on Wednesday but dragged late into the night and by Thursday, ZEC was still to publish the final lists of the successful ones.
Piecemeal lists of those that successfully submitted their papers at various centres around the country have been awash on social media with some of the candidates and their political parties being the sources of the information.
