Zifa suspends referee

Harare, (New Ziana) – The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) has suspended referee Rusununguko Mutero from officiating in the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League (PSL) for six match days, following concerns over his performance in a recent league fixture.

In a statement, ZIFA confirmed that Mutero will not be part of the referee panel from matchday 24 to matchday 29 of the 2025 season.

The disciplinary action comes after an assessment of his officiating during the Green Fuel FC vs FC Platinum encounter played at Green Fuel Arena on 26 July 2025. According to the Match Commissioner’s report, Mutero’s performance fell below the expected standards, a lapse which constituted a breach of paragraph 21 of the Referees’ Code of Conduct.

The association said such shortcomings compromise the integrity of the league and warranted firm corrective measures.

“As the governing body of football in Zimbabwe, ZIFA remains committed to upholding the highest standards of refereeing, fairness, and integrity in the game. Continuous monitoring and accountability measures are in place to ensure that match officials maintain professionalism and consistency in their duties,” reads part of the statement.

The suspension underscores ZIFA’s renewed hard stance on accountability and transparency in match officiating as the league season enters its decisive phase.
