Harare (New Ziana)-Sixteen people tested positive for Covid-19 on Wednesday, bringing Zimbabwe’s confirmed cases to 222, the Ministry of Health and Child Care said on Thursday.

In a daily update, the Ministry said all new cases were recorded among citizens who recently returned from South Africa.

“Sixteen (16) cases tested positive for Covid-19 today. These are all returnees from South Africa and all are isolated,” it said.

“To date the total number of confirmed cases is 222, recovered 29, active cases 189 and 4 deaths, since the onset of the outbreak on 20 March 2020,” it added.

Of the 222 Covid-19 cases, Harare province has the highest number of confirmed Covid-19 cases at 93 followed by Masvingo province with 35.

The new Covid-19 infections came out of 849 rapid screening and 722 PCR diagnostic tests conducted countrywide on Wednesday.

Cumulatively, Zimbabwe has tested 49 603 samples (29 951 rapid screening and 20 012 PRC diagnostic tests) for Covid-19.

Over the past few months Zimbabwe has been receiving some of its citizens who are being repatriated mainly from South Africa and Botswana, as well as others who are returning voluntarily after losing their livelihoods in lockdowns effected in countries across the globe.
