Zim decentralises number plates distribution

Harare (New Ziana) – Motorists will no longer travel to the capital to get vehicle registration plates as the service has been decentralised to provinces across the country, Transport and Infrastructure Development Minister Felix Mhona said on Thursday.
Speaking at an event to announce the appointment of new boards for the Zimbabwe National Roads Authority (Zinara)and the Airports Company of Zimbabwe, Mhona said the Central Vehicle Registration had partnered Zimpost to ensure that motorists can access number plates from nearest post offices.
“We are saying you can get number plates from your province through the Zimpost arrangement we have made so that we make life easier for our people so that they do not come to a congested place,” he said.
Mhona said decentralisation was also expected to curb corruption.
“The issue of coming to a congested place is a breeding ground for corruption.
“People can now access number plates from provinces. We want to make sure we move with speed so that you do not get prejudiced,” he said.
The decentralised issuance of number plates is expected to clear an existing backlog.
Meanwhile, Mhona announced the appointment of public relations practitioner Dr George Manyaya as chairperson of the Zinara board. He will be deputised by Lizwe Bunu while Alderman Nasson Mudzara joins the board as an ordinary member.
Other Zinara board members were appointed earlier this month.
Mhona also announced the appointment of Sinikiwe Gwatidzo as the deputy chairperson of the Airports Company of Zimbabwe board.
Speaking after his appointment, Zinara board chairperson Dr Manyaya said :”As a team, we know some of the issues that need to be done for example right now we need to upgrade and update the ICT infrastructure and software to enhance operational efficiencies”.
