Zim goes a week without new Covid-19 case

Share

Harare, (New Ziana)– Zimbabwe has now gone for a week without registering a new Covid-19 case, the longest infection-free period it has experienced since recording the first case in March.

The country to date has four coronavirus related deaths, 34 confirmed
cases and five recoveries.

Observers have, however, expressed concern on the slow pace of recoveries.

“Seven days have passed since the last reported PCR confirmed case,”
the Ministry of Health and Child Care said in an update released on
Thursday.

Firms are encouraged to get alcohol based sanitizers to avoid the spreading of Covid19.

The last recorded cases were on April 29.

As at May 6, the country had conducted 8 244 rapid screening tests and
7 808 PCR diagnostic tests.

Zimbabwe has since March 30 been under a lockdown aimed at curtailing
spread of the disease.

The lockdown has been extended twice, and is expected end around
mid-month.

However, it has been relaxed a bit, with formal businesses allowed to resume operations but the informal sector is still shut down until May 18.

With improved availability of test kits, government has since late
last month scaled up testing across the country, conducting over 1 000
tests a day.

Zimbabwe has also received material and financial support from world
bodies, well wishers and other friendly countries in the fight against
Covid-19 which has negatively impacted on all sectors of the economy
and social life.
