Marondera (New Ziana) – The Zimbabwe government is committed to implementing high-impact and community development projects that boost the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of provinces.

President Mnangagwa said this when he commissioned Muchekeranwa Dam, formerly Causeway, in Marondera East, which was constructed through a public-private partnership (PPP).

President Mnangagwa also commissioned the Muchekeranwa-Wenimbi pipeline as well as launched the Muchekeranwa Irrigation Project and the Presidential Fisheries Scheme that would assist villagers and farmers.

The dam project dovetails with the Government Vision 2030, which aims to make Zimbabwe a middle-income economy whilst also set to transform the local community livelihoods.

“This dam will give impetus to improved agricultural production and its potential should be harnessed. High-impact community development projects like this will help boost the province’s GDP and we have already commissioned projects of this magnitude in other provinces,” President Mnangagwa said.

He called for the utilization of the dam which will also benefit the Municipality of Marondera, Marondera University of Agricultural Science and Technology and other communities in Manicaland province.

“You must utilize the dam to enhance national food security and create employment. Great collaboration in the agriculture sector should be pursued through fish farming and processing. Our vision is to create domestic empowerment of communities.”

Construction of Muchekeranwa Dam started in 2016 and it has a capacity to hold 75 million cubic metres of water and to irrigate 2 250 hectares.
