Zim in major Covid-19 cases jump

Harare(New Ziana)- Zimbabwe on Thursday recorded 20 locally transmitted Covid-19 cases, its highest daily count so far, with most of them being reported in Bulawayo.

The 20 locally transmitted cases were part of the 62 Covid-19 infections recorded on Thursday, the second highest daily tally after the 76 recorded on May 27.

In a daily update, the Ministry of Health and Child Care said investigations were on-going to establish the source of local Covid-19 infections.

“Sixty-two (62) cases tested positive for Covid-19 today. These include returnees from South Africa (24), United States of America (5), Zambia (4), Lesotho (4), Botswana (3), Namibia (2) and 20 local and are all isolated.

“Nine (9) of the local cases are contacts of known confirmed cases. Investigations are on- going to establish the source of infection for the other eleven (11) local cases,”

“To date, the total number of confirmed cases is 463; recovered 63, active cases 396 and 4 deaths, since the onset of the outbreak on 20 March 2020,” it said.

Of the total new Covid-19 infections, Bulawayo had 32 cases, followed by Harare with 15 while Midlands had the third highest number with 8 new cases. Matabeleland North had 4 cases, while Mashonaland West and Mashonaland Central had 2 and 1 cases respectively.

Cumulatively, Zimbabwe has tested 61 413 samples for Covid-19.

The government has set a target to test at least 30 000 samples for Covid-19 every month.
