Zim records 8 new Covid-19 infections

Harare (New Ziana)-Zimbabwe on Friday recorded eight new infections of Covid-19, bringing the national cumulative cases to 625, the Ministry of Health and Child Care has said.

In an update, the Ministry said the new Covid-19 cases were recorded among returning citizens and locals with no travel history outside the country.

The Ministry said investigations were underway to establish the source of the local Covid-19 cases.

“Eight (8) cases tested positive for Covid-19 today. These include returnees from South Africa (6), Botswana (1) and 1 local case who are isolated.

“Investigations are underway to establish the source of infection for the local case,” it said.

The Ministry of Health added: “To date the total number of confirmed cases is 625; recovered 176, active cases 442 and 7 deaths, since the onset of the outbreak on 20 March 2020”.

While imported cases still account for the bulk of infections, local transmissions have been on the rise in the past two weeks.

New recoveries were reported in Masvingo (2) and Bulawayo (1) provinces bringing the total number of people who have healed from Covid-19 to176.
The number of tests carried out to date to ascertain infection now stands at 75 485.

Zimbabwe is under a level 2 lockdown for an indefinite period aimed at minimising citizens’ movement and gatherings to curtail a wild fire spread of infections, which could stretch the country’s healthcare system.
