Harare (New Ziana)- A 21- year old Harare woman succumbed to Covid-19 on Saturday, becoming Zimbabwe’s eighth death from the disease, the Ministry of Health has said.

“Today we regret to report a facility death of a female aged 21 from Harare Province who tested positive today with no history of travel and had co-morbidities,” the Health Ministry said in a statement.

The Ministry of Health also reported 73 new Covid-19 cases, the highest daily total since the country’s first case in March.

“Seventy three (73) cases tested positive for Covid-19. These include returnees from South Africa (55), Botswana (3), Mozambique (3), USA (2), Australia (1), Zambia (1), and 8 local transmissions who are isolated.”

“Two of the local cases are contacts of known confirmed cases, investigations are underway to establish the source of infection for the other 6 cases,” said the Ministry.

The latest infections bring Zimbabwe’s cumulative Covid-19 cases to 698.
“To date, the total number of confirmed cases is 698; recovered 181, active cases 509 and 8 deaths, since the onset of the outbreak on 20 March, 2020,” said the Ministry.

The number of tests carried out to date to ascertain infection now stands at 78 465.
Zimbabwe is under a level 2 lockdown for an indefinite period aimed at minimising citizens’ movement and gatherings to spread of Covid-19 infections.
